One Simple Way to Bring Gratitude to Your Family Life Everyday
Let’s Talk About Gratitude: The Secret to a Happier Family Life
Let’s talk about something that can truly level up your family life—gratitude.
We have countless opportunities every day to show our gratitude. Whether it’s during a morning walk where you name five things you’re grateful for or simply taking a moment when you first wake up to reflect on three things that bring you joy, gratitude is a powerful practice.
As parents, and as humans, embracing gratitude is essential. Because when we live in gratitude, we are living at a higher vibration, attracting abundance, and filling our lives with happiness.
So, I want you to truly be real with yourself for a moment and think about the last time you made gratitude a daily practice in your home with your family?
My parenting advice for you here is to remember that daily habits matter and help us create the life we want. Which means… If you're looking for a life that’s filled with joy and happiness, then start focusing on gratitude in your home *every* *single* *day*.
How do I know this? Besides countless studies showing us that when we focus on gratitude, we not only feel better, it’s also true that we connect more deeply with our kids. Because when we lean into gratitude, the mindset can lead to stronger, closer relationships with our children and fewer conflicts, no matter what challenges the day throws our way.
And what I know to be true is that my kids love, honor, and are grateful for the things in their lives because they’ve learned to see the value in them. By modeling gratitude in my own life, I’ve taught them how to recognize and appreciate the goodness around them.
So if you’re looking to support your children in practicing more gratitude, keep it simple, keep it fun, and keep it engaging for your family. And in my opinion, a great place to start is during mealtime.
How to Bring Gratitude to Mealtime
So, why meal time? Well, one of the best things about gratitude is that it doesn’t need to be complicated or take up a lot of time. Meals are a great starting point because it’s already a shared moment where everyone can focus on being present.
The next time you sit down to eat with your family, take just two minutes to practice gratitude together. Here’s how:
Have everyone at the table and come up with a statement you can all share that is anchored in gratitude. Maybe you each share something different or you have the same statement you share. Whatever works for your family works. Yep. It’s really that simple.
Here are a few options, but remember to be flexible, make it your own, and involve your family in the process:
- Thank you for my food.
- Thank you for the earth and farmers that provided this food.
- I am grateful for the food I am about to eat.
- I am grateful for everyone who helped prepare this meal and get it to the table.
- I am grateful for the flavors and variety that make this meal special.
- I am grateful for the nourishment this food provides to my body.
Once you’ve created this meal time gratitude habit, keep going! If you’re practicing this during breakfast, next you might each share something else you’re grateful for in your life beyond the food you’re sharing. Or if you’re doing this at dinner time, maybe add in something you each are grateful for that happened during the day.
The goal is to keep layering on different ways to share gratitude, showing your kids that being thankful is important. And you know what? Watch how joy and harmony start to flow into your days. I promise you, gratitude unlocks happiness. So, lead with a grateful heart, teach your kids to do the same, and see what happens next. You’ve got this!
